Order, Family and Description

Chrysomelid beetles are a diverse group that includes a respectable number of extremely decorated and colorful beetles. Often used for articles of personal adornment such as necklaces, leaf beetles are aggressive plant feeders which include some serious agricultural pests. Related leaf beetles called tortoise beetles are among the few to exhibit care for the young larvae and the adult female will shelter the young with its own body. Beyond their bold coloration, leaf beetles employ diverse chemical defenses often derived from the plants they eat. The San bushmen of the Northern Kalahari in Africa use a toxin from larvae of the Arrow Poison Beetle to tip their arrows.
