Order, Family and Description

Several species of brightly colored planthoppers inhabited the densely wooded mountainous region of Sulawesi in Indonesia. This species relies on outrageous coloration as part of its defense strategy. Unlike other fulgorid species in the area that opt to hide from potential predators, this species throws opens its fore wings to flash even brighter red flight hind wings. If that display does not deter the approach sufficiently, this planthopper resorts to flight as a last line of defense. Such bold behavioral defense tactics seem out of character for this typically unobtrusive group of insects.
