Order, Family and Description

Large congregations of this swallowtail butterfly are found along the banks of an Indonesian river as they drink minerals. Caterpillars of this group have a retractable "Y" shaped fleshy protrusion called an osmetorium which serves as a stink organ when disturbed. Named for the long tails on hindwing, swallowtails represent an iconographic family with the French name for butterfly being papillon. The butterfly is a multicultural positive symbol for the beauty of nature and their daytime flight habits makes them more conspicuous than moths.
